 | | | | Harper's Spanish Restaurant Manchester - reader comments | "We visited Harpers after trawling the net for family run eating houses that use good quality ingredients. My partner and I had been to an evening with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall just around the corner, so we were really hungry after talking food for an hour or so. We were greeted and given a nice table without them even asking my reservation name, which was strange as the place was quite full (this usually means get them in and out as quick as possible). After drinks, we ordered a few tapas dishes and a Ceasar Salad. The lighting was very dark, so when my good lady passed me a piece of chicken which she had bitten into, to see if it was OK, I had to go next to a side light. The chicken was raw in the middle so I got the attention from one of the many waiters and told him. He asked if we wanted another, to which we told them to just send us a fresh salad without any chicken. We waited 10 minutes, then I went up to the desk. They had not even ordered my new salad and when one waiter asked another what had happened, he flew off the handle and started shouting. I had had enough at this point so I offered to pay for the drinks and go. The waiter told us just to go! I understand that mistakes can be made but the severity of what could of happened if we had eaten that chicken is beyond a joke. We did not receive an apology from anyone in the building and left, what started out as a good night, feeling down and hungry." - stuart taylor, atherton - NEW MEMBER (18/10/09 - visited on a saturday evening) |
| "We were meeting old friends, who we only see about three times a year, in Harpers and nobody rushed us while we were there. We were able to sit chatting after we had finished the meal, which was nice. Everyone was polite and friendly without going over the top." - mrs k bishop, sale 15/3/09 (visited on a friday lunch) |
| "Eugino has kept up the good tradition that Felix left behind. Harpers is a great place to eat. We have been going there for a few years and will keep on going. We would recommend anybody visiting if you enjoy good food. Eugino & Kenny always make you feel very welcome." - gill ward, manchester 13/2/09 (visited on a wednesday) |
| "The food was tasty but nothing special, the decor is very strange with a mixture of sporting memorabilia that didn't really seem to go. Harpers is not the best Spanish restaurant in town, but certainly not the worst." - nick, stockport 14/4/08 (visited on a monday afternoon) |
| "Harper's is a favourite of many a retired footballer and local celeb as well as being the restaurant of choice for many local business folk and hungry shoppers. It's a welcoming place and the food reflects the decor - simple, non pretentious and homely. There's signed Manchester City and Spanish football shirts, portraits of Manchester United heroes and a huge painting of Olympic medalist Kelly Holmes dominating one wall. Unlike Kelly, the food at Harper's isn't going to win any International medals but that's not what this place is about - it's an all inclusive eating venue with extremely friendly waiters and a great menu, ideal for a light lunch, a family gathering or a full business meal.
The lunchtime menu is excellent value, £9.95 for 3 courses with a good selection of dishes, whilst the a la carte menu is still reasonably priced with a focus on seafood dishes. The Lemon Salmon was tasty although I'm not sure why the lemon was covered in herbs whilst the fish itself lacked any garnish. The Chicken with Chorizo in Tomato sauce was similar in presentation; there basically wasn't any - the focus purely being on the taste of the food itself. Harpers is nowhere near as impressive as the likes of Paul Heathcote's Grado at Piccadilly or even Evuna on Deansgate - the laminated menu's with pictures of footballs on, the old crockery and the basic decor doesn't help - however it doesn't try to be. Fortunately for Harper's, us Mancunians don't necessarily judge a restaurant on it's decor and that's why it's forever busy!" - restaurants of manchester 1/3/08 (visited on a friday lunch) |
