Walrus
Canteen Manchester - reader comments |
"Walrus
would not be my usual sort of place for Saturday lunch but
we went there after seeing it in the Restaurants of Manchester
Top 10 list. As said previously, this is a bar with a restaurant,
rather than a restaurant, and it has a trendy Asian
fusion menu. We chose two types of bento boxes, which
contained a very tasty mini-banquet style meal, including
a range of fish, prawns and chicken, and all three of us were
very satisfied with the meal. The boxes range in price from
about £12-14, which might seem high, but they proved
to be good value. There are also plenty of
lower priced dishes. Another plus is the great range
of drinks available, including the likes of Blue
Moon beer from Colorado. The place is very modern
in style, but the owners need to be thinking about
spending a bit of money on keeping it fresh, because the furnishing
and decor are starting to need some attention - probably not
an issue at busy times but definitely quite noticeable when
the place is fairly quiet. One big compliment goes to the
excellent barman, who looked after us exceptionally
well. Overall, Walrus is definitely recommended!"

"Although
primarily a bar, rather than a restaurant, the food being
served at Walrus is amongst the best Japanese cuisine Manchester
has to offer. The menu was created by ex-Nobu chef Paul
Day and the quality of the Bento Boxes, Donburi rice bowls
and Oriental seafood dishes is as good as any you'll find
at Manchester's celebrated Japanese restaurants. The prices
are also inviting and the informal canteen style makes it
the ideal place to grab a bite to eat with friends, over
fantastic drinks. We love Walrus!"
