Rosso Rosso
It's now 5 years since Rio Ferdinand and some local restaurateurs opened Rosso at the very top of King Street, a timescale which seems apt given Rio's shirt number during his recently discontinued United playing career, a stint which saw Rio bring home pretty much every accolade in club football. Now it's fair to say that over the years Rosso has been consistently solid too, with a packed dining room 7 days a week a testament to this. Its without question become a Manchester favourite, and is now a well-established restaurant, with good reason.
It's been a while since we've eaten at Rosso, although we do frequent their excellent bar, which offers cocktails for a mere £5 from 5-7, and has a great selection of wines and champagnes. We were delighted to receive an invitation to try our Rosso's newest food menu, so headed up King Street, just as Rio was signing his transfer papers to leave town.

Our welcome was warm and friendly, whilst sacrificing no glamour in the process. We were seated at table 5, Rio's personal favourite, and relaxed into surveying the menu. Prices reflect the glamourous venue, and it's hard to find a starter for less than a tenner though. Main course pastas and pizzas are also comfortably over a tenner, and more substantial meat or fish mains regularly tip £20+. Hefty prices, but would the quality of food sit alongside the warm and welcoming service?.....[click here for full review]

If you want to eat Japanese food in the city, then you're restricted to a handful of places, maybe less in truth, some of which are pretty good, some of which serve pretty poor, run of the mill sushi. Now there's actually a lot more to Japanese cuisine than the typical offerings, such as everybody's stereotypical Japanese food raw fish based nemesis; Sashimi.
Then there's everybody's favourite of Tempura, aka deep fried battered delights, something which the Japanese have been doing better than anybody for half a millennium. We like to think that we invented deep fried fish, but sadly it's not true. Now for us, Japanese is one of the great cuisines of the world, and is renowned for use of daisy fresh produce, lots of seafood, razor sharp knife skills, and relentless attention to detail, creating dishes with bang on flavours, presented like a work of art.
Top Japanese sushi chefs do nothing but prepare rice for the first few years of their education. That’s how sacred the art is. Add to that the fact that Tokyo has more 3 star Michelin restaurants than Paris, in fact it's got more than any city anywhere full stop, so it's clearly a cuisine with plenty to offer, yet in this country is so often represented badly.

So, would you then expect to find quality Japanese food in Manchester, down a little side alley, just outside the city centre over the road from the side gates to the arena, where pop star fans await their favourite artists' arrival, like crazed Ninjas?.....[click here for full review]
